WhatsApp parental controls for teens in Singapore

WhatsApp has announced that its new parental controls for teens and pre-teens are now available in Singapore.

The new tools are designed to give parents and guardians greater control over how younger users interact with WhatsApp, while encouraging families to have open conversations about online safety and responsible messaging.

Parent-managed accounts for pre-teens

For younger children, WhatsApp is introducing Parent Managed Accounts, which give parents or guardians more direct control over the account.

Parents can decide who can contact the account and which groups the child can join, limiting interactions with unknown people. They can also review message requests from unknown contacts and manage the account’s privacy settings.

The managed account is protected by a parent-set PIN on the child’s device. This ensures that only the parent or guardian can access and change the relevant privacy settings.

To set this up, you’ll need access to your teen’s phone.

For teenagers, WhatsApp takes a more flexible approach.

Parents and teens can set up a range of optional parental controls together, allowing families to decide which settings are appropriate based on the teenager’s age and level of independence.

Parents can choose privacy settings, including who can see the teen’s profile photo and who can add them to groups. These settings are protected by a parent-set PIN.

Parents can also receive notifications when their teen joins or leaves a group, or when a group they are part of grows significantly in size. This gives parents an indication of changes to their teen’s social interactions.

Additional controls cover Channels and Status updates. Parents can choose how their teens use Channels, which Status updates they can view, and who can see their own Status updates.

Parents can also manage how their teens interact with Meta AI on WhatsApp. They can choose the default 13+ setting or enable a stricter “Limited Content” option, giving families another way to tailor the AI experience to their teen.

Privacy remains at the core

While the new controls give parents greater oversight, WhatsApp emphasises that they are designed to support open conversations between parents and teens, rather than give parents access to their children’s private conversations.

Crucially, personal messages and calls remain private and protected by end-to-end encryption. Parents, guardians and WhatsApp cannot read or listen to those conversations.
