The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered is now available as a free upgrade for existing owners, bringing arguably the final round of graphical, performance and gameplay improvements to CD Projekt Red’s epic fantasy RPG. As previously reported, the update is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, although – unsurprisingly – it is the PC version that gets most of the new visual toys.
And there are quite a few of them.
Firstly, there’s path tracing, essentially taking the ray-tracing feature introduced with the game’s Next-Gen Update in 2022 several steps further. Rather than applying ray tracing to individual effects such as reflections, shadows and ambient occlusion, path tracing handles much more of the scene’s lighting together, including indirect and bounced light. The result should be noticeably more convincing lighting across the Continent, especially indoors and in scenes illuminated by candles, fires and other local light sources.
