A largely forgotten Magic: The Gathering planeswalker has suddenly become one of the hottest cards on the secondary market. Kasmina, Enigma Sage has climbed by more than 1,000% in value after Reality Fracture previews revealed a powerful new interaction capable of ending games as early as turn three in some formats.
Kasmina spent years sitting comfortably in bulk-mythic territory after debuting in 2021’s Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion. And as recently as early September, copies could be obtained for roughly a dollar. Now, tracked prices for both the regular and borderless versions have exploded into double digits, with MTGStocks market data showing gains well above 1,000% over the past month – and more than 1,200% over the past week. It’s the latest dramatic Magic price movement to follow new-card speculation, after cards from the Secret Lair Zeta Set that became legal in Pauper saw similar attention.
Why Jace’s Machinations Is Sending Kasmina Soaring
The culprit is Jace’s Machinations, a three-mana blue instant from Reality Fracture. The card uses the set’s new Empower Jace mechanic to create a Jace planeswalker token, if necessary, before putting eight loyalty counters on it, and then it allows Jace planeswalkers to activate loyalty abilities at instant speed for the rest of the turn. With Kasmina, Enigma Sage on the battlefield, that spell becomes significantly more powerful.
Kasmina’s static ability gives every other planeswalker you control her loyalty abilities, including her -8 ultimate. Since Jace’s Machinations immediately leaves its Jace token sitting on eight loyalty, that token can use Kasmina’s ultimate right away to search your library for an instant or sorcery sharing a color with the blue token and cast that spell for free – all at instant speed, thanks to the Machinations.
Kasmina Might Have Finally Found Her Moment
Players quickly landed on Enter the Infinite as a particularly obnoxious payoff. Casting the 12-mana sorcery for free draws your entire library, opening the door for Thassa’s Oracle to finish the game – or perhaps another newly revealed Reality Fracture card, Fblthp, Impossibly Lost, so long as you can put cards back in your library before the legendary Homunculus connects with a foe in combat. Emergent Ultimatum is another tried-and-true game-ending spell that can be conjured up and cast for free via Kasmina’s ultimate.
With a turn-one mana dork, the Kasmina-plus-Jace’s Machinations engine can theoretically come online as early as turn three in Pioneer. Whether that translates into an actual competitive deck is another matter entirely.
Two-card combos discovered during preview season have a long history of looking terrifying before meeting removal, counterspells, awkward draws, and real tournament play. Kasmina was also barely seeing competitive play before this interaction appeared, which means much of the current price movement is speculation rather than proven demand.
Still, that is exactly what makes the spike notable. One Reality Fracture card has taken a roughly $1 planeswalker that spent five years collecting dust and turned it into one of Magic’s fastest-moving cards almost overnight – further cementing how quickly an overlooked card can explode in price. Preview season strikes again.
