That’s another year in the books for the Emmys, this time hosted by Law & Order SVU’s Mariska Hargitay. Widow’s Bay came away as the clear winner of the night, taking six trophies, including closing the night with a win for Best Comedy Series. Kate O’Flynn started the ceremony off strong, winning the comedy supporting actress category for fan-favorite Patricia. Matthew Rhys made history, winning both awards for Actor in a Drama and Comedy Series for The Beast in Me and Widow’s Bay. He’s the first guy to take both trophies in the same year. The Late Show With Stephen Colbert got an awards-show sendoff, taking Best Variety Series (which has gone to Last Week With John Oliver since 2016). Michael J. Fox was honored with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for the work he’s done with his foundation on Parkinson’s research. Reba McEntire honored Dolly Parton, singing “Appalachian Memories,” and Macaulay Culkin, Annie Murphy, and Dan Levy gave a funny, touching tribute to Catherine O’Hara tribute to start the In Memoriam segment where Noah Kahan sang “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
Otherwise, it was a quiet night for basically every other nominated show. Pluribus and The Pitt both came in a distant second to Widow’s Bay trophy count, with two awards each. For Pluribus, Rhea Seehorn won for Actress in a Drama Series (her first Emmy ever) and Vince Gilligan took the prize for Writing in a Drama Series (his first writing Emmy ever). The Pitt nabbed the big Best Drama award, along with Noah Wylie for Best Actor in a Drama. Hacks only took home one Emmy (that went to Jean Smart) for its fifth and final season. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Beef, Paradise, The Bear, Abbott Elementary, and other series got completely shut out during the televised ceremony.
