The end is nigh for physical games on PlayStation, and Sony is making an effort to remind you of that. The company recently sent out an email reminding people of the terms and conditions they agreed to so they could use PlayStation consoles, underlining that digital purchases grant you a license, not a game. This has left a bitter taste in fans’ mouths, especially after Sony announced plans for an all-digital future.
Starting January 2028, Sony will cease disc production. If that wasn’t bad enough, some games released before 2028 are already hopping on the all-digital bandwagon, as they will not be available in a physical format at all. For example, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be a digital-only game. Any physical edition of GTA 6 will consist only of an empty box containing a download code. This takes away players’ choice to actually own a game by buying a disc. Instead, they will be forced to make a digital purchase.
People already haven’t reacted well to that announcement, which is why the recently sent out email from Sony stung even harder. This particular part of the PlayStation End User License Agreement is particularly gut-wrenching:
