Netflix ‘Actively’ Exploring Bid for Warner Bros. Discovery, New Report Claims

Netflix is in the mix for Warner Bros. Discovery, a new report has claimed.

Reuters reported that the streamer is “actively” exploring a bid for the company behind 2025 hits A Minecraft Movie, Superman, and Sinners. That means it has hired an investment bank to work on a prospective offer.

If Netflix is successful, it’ll bring in the likes of Harry Potter, the DC Universe, and of course rival streamer HBO Max into the fold. But it may have competition, with Paramount Skydance heavily linked to an acquisition.

Last week, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed it was officially considering buyout offers. Meanwhile, there has been speculation that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, architect of the rebooted DC Universe, may leave his position as a result of a merger.

However, Bloomberg reported that David Ellison, CEO and controlling shareholder of Paramount, plans to keep the creative teams of the two studios intact, while consolidating some of the marketing and distribution, should its deal go through. While there was no mention of Gunn in Bloomberg’s report, fans are assuming Gunn’s job would be safe given he is considered part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s creative team. Gunn is yet to respond on social media.

Gunn is currently working on the script for 2027 movie Man of Tomorrow, following the release of DCU kickstarter Superman in July. Peacemaker Season 2 continued the fledgling new universe, with Supergirl and Clayface set to launch next year. There’s also a Lanterns TV show in the works for HBO Max.

Speaking recently on the BobaTalks YouTube channel, Gunn was asked if the plot developments in Superman and Peacemaker would go beyond The Man of Tomorrow. Replying, he confirmed they go “significantly further,” before adding: “whether or not that’ll be me that’s able to fulfill that promise depends on a lot of things in life.”

Warner Bros. Discovery includes a number of high-profile media brands and entertainment franchises, such as HBO, CNN, Harry Potter, and DC properties such as Superman and Batman. It’s enjoyed big success at the box office this year with DC Studios’ Superman, A Minecraft Movie, and Sinners. 2023’s Barbie made over a billion dollars in theaters.

On the TV and streaming side of things, Warner Bros. has HBO Max, which is home to the likes of The Penguin, Peacemaker, The Sopranos, The Last of Us, The White Lotus, and many other award-winning TV shows. Upcoming shows include Game of Thrones spinoffs A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon Season 3. DC TV show Lanterns is also due out on HBO Max next year.

Warner Bros. also has a significant video game operation that includes the likes of Rocksteady (Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League), TT Games (LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight), NetherRealm (Mortal Kombat), and Avalanche Software (Hogwarts Legacy).
