There are some things a teenager probably does not expect Instagram to tell their parents, and their search activity would surely be one of them. That is about to change, although for a rather serious reason: Instagram can now alert parents when their teen repeatedly searches for terms associated with suicide or self-harm within a short period.
The feature was first announced in February and initially rolled out in the US, UK, Australia and Canada, before expanding to the European Union, Brazil and India. Meta says the alerts are now available globally to supervising parents, so families in Singapore should be able to use them too.
That’s not to say Instagram will begin forwarding an entire search history to mum and dad. The alerts apply only to parents and teens using the platform’s supervision tools, and Meta says it takes several relevant searches within a short period of time before one is sent. Meta has also not revealed the exact number but says it settled on the threshold after “studying search behaviour and consulting safety experts”.
