With Siri AI slated to debut later this year, Apple is reportedly preparing a renewed push into the smart home market, with a long-rumoured smart home hub set to take centre stage.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is developing two versions of the device. The first model, codenamed J490, reportedly features a 7-inch display mounted on a half-dome-shaped base, making it suitable for placement on kitchen counters, bedside tables, or desks. The second variant, codenamed J491, is designed for wall mounting and will feature a new magnetic mounting system.
The smart home hub is expected to run a new operating system built on tvOS while incorporating interface elements from both watchOS and iOS. Bloomberg claims the device will use facial recognition to identify who is standing in front of it, estimate their distance from the display, and dynamically personalise the interface. Depending on the user, it could surface relevant information such as calendars, reminders, notes, smart home controls and other personalised content in his/her preferred layout and font size.
