Halo Fans May Be Able to Playtest Future Games on PlayStation

An update to the Halo Insider program seems to suggest future Halo games will be available to playtest on PlayStation consoles. It’s the end of an era for the iconic sci-fi FPS series as it moves away from Xbox exclusivity, but that also means it’s the beginning of a new one, especially for Sony fans. Not only will the next Halo come to PS5, but PlayStation users may be able to take part in testing future releases.

After months of rumors, Microsoft officially unveiled Halo: Campaign Evolved on October 24, confirming that Halo Studios is remaking Combat Evolved and releasing it on PlayStation. While the shift may not have been a surprise, given the many leaks and unsubtle statements from Xbox execs about the end of console exclusivity, it’s still a momentous announcement. PlayStation users will be able to play Halo on the system of their choice for the first time, but it won’t be the last.

Halo Insider Update Suggests Playtesting Will Open Up to PlayStation Consoles

As spotted by grunt.api on X, the Halo Insider Console Flighting page now gives users the option to select PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, and PS5 Pro as their most-used systems. “Flighting” is how the Insider program refers to closed playtests, so the inclusion of Sony consoles seemingly indicates that PlayStation users will be able to join the development process for upcoming Halo projects. It’s unclear if that means Halo: Campaign Evolved will be the first in the series to include PS4 and PS5 users in playtesting. Microsoft has confirmed that the Halo series will become available on PlayStation from here on, so Sony playtesting could start with the sequel to Halo: Infinite or another future title.

Now that Halo will be available on PlayStation going forward, it makes sense that Halo Studios would want to playtest the series on Sony platforms. The PS5 version of Halo: Campaign Evolved will feature DualSense controller support, which could entail some features unique to PlayStation, in which case, an Xbox and PC-only playtest wouldn’t gauge how all aspects of the game performs. Technical details aside, expanding the Halo Insider program is a way for Microsoft to get a wider, more diverse fanbase to get engaged in the franchise.

Microsoft answers vaguely to Halo Campaign Evolved AI rumors

The inclusion of PS4 on the Console Flighting page may be surprising, as Campaign Evolved won’t launch on the last-gen console. Sony is also phasing out some PlayStation 4 services as it sunsets the system and gears up for the PS6 era. Some users suggest the PS4 is only on the list for survey purposes or a PlayStation release for an older title like The Master Chief Collection, both of which could theoretically also apply to the PS5. Halo and Sony fans will have to keep their eyes peeled for more official information to learn more.
