Hundreds of stranded migrant workers in Singapore, most of them from India and Bangladesh, are being supported by the Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MoM), following their group appeal to the ministry over months of unpaid wages.

Singapore Minister of State at the Ministry of Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash posted a video on Instagram on Wednesday, showing migrant workers being counselled and being given grocery items to see them through these difficult times.

About 100 migrant workers from the Indian subcontinent had turned up at the MoM office on Monday to seek help. Many of them were employed by KPA Engineering, an air-conditioner maintenance services company, that stopped paying wages and gave the workers no assurance of future payments. This was followed another appeal on Tuesday from another group of 100-odd workers.

And now, MoM has identified more such stranded workers — about 400 in all, unpaid for 3-4 months — and decided to give them SGD 200 in cash and vouchers from the Singapore Government, it was announced on Wednesday, as per a PTI report.

In his Instagram post on Wednesday, minister Dinesh Vasu Dash wrote: “Today, we met workers from KPA Engineering and SK Industries who have been affected by unpaid salaries.

“Over the past two days, TADM (Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management) has helped more than 250 workers lodge salary claims and will facilitate mediation with the employers as quickly as possible.
