As British politics prepares for another change of leadership, one familiar face has once again stolen the spotlight online: Tobias Gough, better known to the internet as “Hot Podium Guy”. The sound engineer was spotted outside 10 Downing Street on 22 June setting up the lectern and testing microphones shortly before Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation, prompting a fresh wave of social media attention.
Gough first went viral in 2019 when viewers noticed him preparing the podium ahead of Theresa May‘s resignation speech. He later reappeared before the departures of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss in 2022, as well as for Rishi Sunak’s first address as prime minister and the 2024 election announcement.
According to CNN, the 42-year-old has become “something of a cult hero” online after outlasting five prime ministers in seven years.
“The most stable figure in British politics since Brexit has been the man wheeling out the resignation podium,” one X user joked.
