KUCHING (Oct 24): An 18-year-old boy from Kuching has reportedly fallen victim to a job scam syndicate and is now being held hostage in Cambodia, with his captors demanding a ransom of USD8,000 (about RM35,000) for his release.
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Public Complaints Bureau chief Milton Foo said the ordeal began in July this year when the teenager was lured by a fake job offer to work as a chef in Singapore but was instead trafficked to Cambodia near the Vietnamese border.
Foo stated that the victim departed Kuching on July 6 using a newly issued passport arranged and paid for by the purported ‘employer’.
“The parents only discovered their son was in Cambodia on Jul 19 after receiving a video call from him via Instagram.
“He appeared bruised and claimed he had been beaten with a baton,” Foo said at a press conference held this afternoon.
