Star Tropics1990, NES
You’d never get EarthBound and Undertale without Star Tropics. This Zelda-like action RPG was developed by Punch-Out!! creator Genyo Takeda and released exclusively in Europe and North America. It was one of the earliest RPGs to ditch the swords and sorcery setting, instead leaning into ‘90s Americana with references to aliens, baseball, yo-yos, and soda pop. Star Tropics has become infamous for its hard-to-reach hidden rooms that often lead to more secret areas. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a great item. If not? Instant death. But its best-known gimmick is probably requiring players to dip a page from the instruction manual into water in order to obtain the solution to a puzzle.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis1992, PC/Mac
This LucasArts point-and-click adventure for PC and Mac feels like the spiritual forerunner to MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. With a captivating story, memorable locations, and thoughtfully designed puzzles, The Fate of Atlantis makes you feel like a clever archaeologist who always manages to stay one step ahead of the Nazis. Early on, you’ll choose from one of three unique paths through the game, depending on your preference for puzzles, action, or teamwork. Each route has its own unique puzzles, cutscenes, and locations, which adds a ton of replay value. From step pyramids to submarines, this one really ticks all the boxes for a classic Indy adventure.
