Halo: Campaign Evolved is officially in the works, as Microsoft unveiled a remake of the first Halo game’s main campaign for multiple platforms, including the PS5, in 2026. While the Halo franchise is finally arriving on PlayStation with Halo: Campaign Evolved, the remake of the first Halo title will not include any online PVP multiplayer modes, aside from campaign co-op for up to four players.
The 2026 launch window of Halo: Campaign Evolved will coincide with the franchise’s 25th anniversary. Originally released as a launch title for the first Xbox console in 2001, Halo: Combat Evolved was Microsoft’s entry into the console gaming scene at the time. Though it predated Xbox Live by a year, Halo: Combat Evolved was also praised for its local multiplayer functionality, which used the original Xbox’s System Link feature. Halo: Combat Evolved received an Anniversary edition re-release in 2011, which is currently available as part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection on PC and Xbox consoles.
Halo: Campaign Evolved Won’t Include PVP Maps
During the 2025 Halo World Championships in Seattle on October 24, Halo Studios finally revealed the long-awaited remake of the first Halo title. Halo: Campaign Evolved arrives sometime in 2026 on PC, Xbox consoles, and PS5. This will mark the first time a Halo game will be available on a PlayStation console after two decades of competition between Sony and Microsoft. However, the Halo franchise’s defining feature of online PVP multiplayer will not be part of Halo: Campaign Evolved. Instead, the upcoming remake will feature split-screen campaign co-op for two players, although this mode will be exclusive to consoles. Additionally, Halo: Campaign Evolved will have a four-player online co-op campaign mode, including cross-play and shared progression across consoles and PC.
Halo Studios confirmed shortly after the remake reveal that future Halo games after Campaign Evolved will also release on PlayStation alongside Xbox and PC. Though the original campaign’s story will not change, Halo: Campaign Evolved will include three prequel chapters that take place before the main game. These three missions will center around Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson. A demo of the campaign’s fourth level, The Silent Cartographer, is now available for Halo World Championship attendees to try out throughout the event.
Once it’s released, Halo: Campaign Evolved will join other Xbox titles like Age of Empires 4 in breaking the barrier between Xbox and PlayStation users. Only time will tell when other Halo titles will follow suit.
