Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight honors the tradition of referential humor and Easter eggs the series is known for. While there is no shortage of deep-cut Batman references and callbacks, we’re more focused on Easter eggs referencing non-Batman material. After all, the whole game is basically an endless stream of Batman references, making it hard to call any of those an Easter egg. Instead, we’ve pulled together the Easter eggs referencing other media and memes. See how many of these you recognize. Note that this will have some minor spoilers.
It’s Always Sunny in Gotham
During the Penguin boss fight, the Penguin makes a reference to the show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, shouting “So anyway, I started blastin.'” This goes a layer deeper, since Danny DeVito, who plays Frank Reynolds in the show, also played the Penguin in Batman Returns, which this version of the Penguin is directly based on. He’s got a few other lines during the boss fight that make other pop culture references, like “Merry Christmas, you filthy animals” from Home Alone 2.
Street Fighter II
After tracking down Black Mask and disabling his security system, he attempts to escape in his sports car. Batman and Batgirl stop him, before the camera shifts to a side angle as you punch his car into pieces, referencing the car smashing from Street Fighter II.
He’s got a particular set of skills
Ra’s Al Ghul makes an appearance in Gotham during the prologue, inviting Bruce Wayne to train with the League of Assassins. His opening line is “I have a particular set of skills,” referencing Liam Neeson’s line in the movie Taken. Neeson also played Ra’s in Batman Begins, referencing the actor’s other work, just like with DeVito.
Look at that subtle off-white coloring
Referencing Batman actors’ other work is a running theme in Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Early in Chapter One, Batman makes a visit to Wayne Enterprises, where he hands his business card to the assistant at the counter. There, a minifig who looks like Jared Leto’s character Paul Allen from American Psycho starts remarking on the quality of the card itself. Of course, Christian Bale stars in American Psycho and played Batman in the Christopher Nolan trilogy.
A tribute to Kevin Conroy
A billboard found throughout Gotham pays tribute to the late Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman in various cartoons and video games, making him the definitive voice of the Dark Knight. A billboard advertises a show called After Hours with Conroy, sporting the tag line “the voice of Gotham’s night.”
