Canon EOS R6 V: video camera with cooling & power zoom

The video story

The headline video feature is 7K Open Gate RAW/MP4 recording, which captures using the full sensor area at the camera’s native 3:2 aspect ratio. The point is post-production flexibility. A single take can be reframed for horizontal, vertical, square or any other aspect ratio without having to reshoot the same scene for each platform. For creators who shoot for both YouTube and TikTok or Instagram Reels from a single client gig, this is arguably more valuable than the resolution itself.

The full list of supported recording sizes is generous. Internal 7K RAW at up to 59.94fps (in DCI 17:9), 7K Open Gate at up to 29.97fps in RAW or MP4, 4K DCI at up to 119.88fps, 4K UHD at up to 119.88fps, 2K DCI at up to 179.8fps, and Full HD at up to 179.8fps. The maximum recording time is approximately 6 hours for normal movies at 100 fps or lower. For storage, it supports two memory cards:

For colour and grading, the EOS R6 V supports Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3, which are specialised gamma curves designed for Canon cameras to maximise dynamic range, providing a flat image with high shadow/highlight detail for professional colour grading. It also supports Custom Picture, custom LUTs, waveform monitor display, 4-channel audio recording, and a standard HDMI Type-A terminal rather than the smaller micro-HDMI port found on consumer hybrids. Colour Filters and Slow & Fast Motion (S&F) mode are also onboard for creative work.

Stabilisation is a coordinated affair. The body has a five-axis sensor-shift system rated up to 7.5 stops at the centre and 7.0 stops at the edges for stills (CIPA 2024 standards). When paired with the new RF20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ, the lens adds Optical IS for up to 8.0 stops at both the centre and the edges. Subject Tracking IS is also supported, which keeps stabilisation locked to the moving subject rather than just the frame.

Stills performance, since the EOS R6 V still does that

Although Canon is positioning the EOS R6 V as a video-first body, the stills performance is the same as the R6 Mark III’s, which is no small thing. The 32.5-megapixel sensor offers a 34% jump in resolution over the R6 Mark II’s 24.2-megapixel sensor, with more cropping latitude and enough detail for 300 dpi A3-sized prints, according to Canon’s claims. The electronic shutter supports up to 40fps continuous shooting with pre-shooting, and the autofocus features are identical to those on the R6 Mark III.

One small caveat. 

The R6 V’s ISO sensitivity for still shots tops out at native 100-64,000, expandable to L:50 and H:102,400. That is one stop lower at the high end than the R6 Mark II’s expanded ISO ceiling of 204,800. For low-light photographers, this is worth noting, since the trade-off is more resolution but slightly less reach at extreme ISOs.

The first L-series power zoom

The RF20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ is the second half of the launch and arguably the more interesting story on its own. It’s Canon’s first L-series lens with a built-in power zoom motor, which means smooth, motorised focal-length transitions that are far more cinematic than manually rotating the zoom ring. Power zooming is configurable across 15 levels each for both fast and slow zoom speeds, and the lens barrel length does not change when zooming, so rig and gimbal balance is preserved.

The lens covers a 20-50mm range with a constant f/4 aperture, keeping exposure stable as the focal length changes. At 20mm, the wide end is ideal for environmental establishment shots or interior scenes with plenty of context. At 50mm, the 0.24m minimum focusing distance captures close-up detail with natural perspective. A new zoom mode selector switch lets users toggle between power zooming and conventional manual zoom operation, which is a small but considered touch.

Physically, the RF20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ is approximately 79.9 x 98.4mm and weighs about 420g, which Canon claims puts it on par with, or arguably better than, the popular RF24-105mm f/4L IS USM for optical performance. The build is dust- and drip-resistant, the filter thread is 67mm, and the optical formula uses 13 elements in 11 groups with a 9-blade aperture for smoother out-of-focus rendering.
