For SQL, another wildly popular language, the opposite is true. 48.5% of Singapore technologists have experience with the language, but just 16.9% of available jobs want SQL. Singapore also has a larger disparity between its proportion of Golang jobs and Golang candidates.

The two cities share common ground on functional language Scala, which is in high demand but very low supply; less than 2% of tech candidates in either city claim Scala expertise.

These numbers don’t tell the whole story, though, which is bad news for Singapore. Both cities have a similar number of available technology jobs, but the number of tech candidates in Singapore is more than three times greater than tech candidates in Hong Kong. Some banks have been cutting Singapore technologists to offshore their roles, while others have been using AI to reduce their headcounts. If you think your role is susceptible to either, perhaps you should consider learning Scala.
