OpenAI could debut its own smartphone by 2028, marking a significant step in the company’s expanding hardware ambitions.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims OpenAI is working with MediaTek and Qualcomm to develop mobile chips, and with Luxshare as the exclusive system co-design and manufacturing partner.
Kuo believes two factors drive OpenAI’s smartphone ambition. First, full control over both hardware and the operating system would allow OpenAI to offer a more seamless and comprehensive AI agent experience. Second, smartphones are the only devices that can capture a user’s full real-time state. This makes them the most valuable source of data for powering always-on AI agents.
