Maguire rises at Anfield to secure biggest win for Amorim

Harry Maguire’s late header secured Ruben Amorim his biggest result as Manchester United manager with a 2-1 win at Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League.

United shocked the Anfield crowd after just two minutes when Bryan Mbeumo pounced on a collision between Liverpool players to score.

But Arne Slot’s Reds grew into the contest as the game wore on and found an equaliser through the excellent Cody Gakpo with 12 minutes remaining.

With United tiring, Anfield waited for an expected winner. However, Maguire had other ideas as he silenced the home support by calmly nodding the visitors in front in the 84th minute from an exquisite ball by Bruno Fernandes.

Gakpo, who hit the frame of the goal three times during the match, would then plant a close-range header wide of an open goal, leaving United to secure their first win at Anfield in almost a decade.

Amorim’s United have won back-to-back league victories for the first time in his tenure while Slot’s Liverpool have lost a fourth successive match for the first time since November 2014.
