OLED iPad Air debut: Apple’s new display tech

To keep pricing in check, Apple is reportedly opting for a lower-spec OLED panel for the iPad Air. The move suggests a more balanced approach after the OLED iPad Pro’s 2024 debut, where higher costs and softer-than-expected demand were said to have prompted adjustments to LG Display’s production plans.

This revised timeline marks a notable shift from earlier expectations. An earlier 2024 forecast from Omdia suggested OLED iPad Air models wouldn’t arrive until 2028.

Meanwhile, Apple’s OLED transition is expected to continue with the iPad mini, which is tipped to launch later this year as the second iPad to adopt OLED. The compact tablet is also rumoured to feature a water-resistant design. This would let it compete more favourably with e-book readers from Kindle and Kobo, which are often water-resistant.
