Apple M4 iPad Air review: Pricey, but good

Hey you look familiar

How similar is the new iPad Air compared to its predecessor? Let’s just say that if I reused photos from the review of the last iPad Air, you won’t be able to tell. I didn’t, of course, but that’s just how little has changed.

Physically, the new iPad Air, which Apple announced just last week, is identical to the model it replaces. It still comes in 11 and 13-inch screen sizes, has the same physical dimensions, the same display, and it even comes in the same four finishes: Space Grey, Blue, Purple, and Starlight.

What’s new

iPad Air improvements

All the improvements are under the hood. New to this iPad Air are the M4 chip, N1 wireless chip, and C1X modem.

The changes are on the inside. This new iPad Air has an upgraded CPU and GPU in the form of the M4 chip, Apple’s own N1 wireless networking chip, and Apple’s own C1X modem. With this array of new silicon, Apple claims this new iPad Air is up to 30% faster than the model it replaces, and that cellular performance is now 50% better while consuming 30% less energy.

Before I touch on performance, a quick note on the M4 chip used in this iPad Air. It isn’t quite the same as the M4 chips found in the last-generation M4 iPad Pro. This iPad Air uses less powerful versions, which have 8 CPU cores and 9 GPU cores. It won’t make a huge difference in real-world use, but it’s still worth pointing out.
