Accident on AYE: Man dies, woman taken to hospital

SINGAPORE – A 21-year-old male motorcyclist died in hospital after a multi-vehicle accident on the AYE towards Tuas on March 31.

A female pillion rider, 19, was also taken conscious to the hospital after the accident, which involved three cars and a motorcycle.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the accident that occurred after the South Buona Vista Road exit at about 6.45pm.

In a video of the aftermath on messaging platform Telegram, at least three cars can be seen amid debris that appears to be from a motorcycle strewn across the expressway.

Several police vehicles and the Expressway Monitoring and Advisory System (EMAS) Vehicle Recovery Service are also at the accident site.

A section across three lanes on the expressway appears closed because of the accident.

When The Straits Times arrived at the accident site at about 8.15pm on March 31, there was heavy traffic congestion on the AYE towards Tuas near South Buona Vista Road.

In a post on social media platform X at 6.53pm on March 31, the Land Transport Authority said there had been an accident on the AYE towards Tuas and advised motorists to avoid lanes 2 and 3.

In a later post at 8.10pm, the authority advised motorists to avoid lane 1 too, adding that traffic was congested till Lower Delta Road.

The driving distance between the South Buona Vista Road exit on the AYE and Lower Delta Road is 4.6km, based on Google Maps.

Transport operator Tower Transit Singapore said in a Facebook post at about 8pm on March 31 that there would be longer waiting times for bus services 97 and 963 because of the accident.

SBS Transit said in a Facebook post about 25 minutes later that bus services 14, 33, 166, 197 and 198 were delayed because of the accident.

In an update to its post at 9.13pm, the transport operator said services 197 and 198 were being diverted from areas near the accident site and would skip nine bus stops.

All five affected bus services had resumed normal operations as at 11.15pm that night, SBS Transit said in a later update.
