Capcom addresses Street Fighter 6’s incest controversy

Street Fighter 6 director Takayuki Nakayama went to X to address the controversy. His statement begins by apologizing for “any confusion” over Alex’s storyline before asserting, “While we have not changed the characters’ backstories, after internal review by the development team, we plan to revise certain text passages that may have been misleading in the near future.” So it certainly seems like Capcom is sticking with incest for the time being.

Nakayama also shared supplementary reading intended to “provide further insight into the characters’ emotions and backstories.” Titled “A Toast Between Fathers,” it explains that Alex and Patricia weren’t always super close when they were growing up as kids. They were still adoptive siblings and second cousins, though. Reception has not been warm online, with one fan drawing exasperated art to mock Capcom’s decision-making, as spotted by Eurogamer.

As of this writing, it’s not clear what changes Capcom is making to those “certain text passages that may have been misleading.” As a report by IGN speculates, Capcom could look to revise Alex and Tom’s relationship to further put some distance between them, though whatever changes Capcom makes will have to do some heavy lifting to wash off the ick caused by its perplexing decision to write an incestuous relationship into the game.
