Thundery showers expected across S’pore till end-Oct; temperature could dip to 23 deg C on some days


SINGAPORE – Thundery showers in the afternoon are expected to continue across Singapore for the second half of October.

It could also get as cool as 23 deg C on some rainy days.

The Meteorological Service Singapore said in a statement on Oct 16 that prevailing inter-monsoon conditions over Singapore and the surrounding region are expected to continue for the rest of the month, with winds mostly light and variable in direction.

Sumatra squalls may bring widespread thundery showers and gusty winds in the pre-dawn hours and morning on some days for the rest of the month, the Met Service added.

Total rainfall for the second fortnight of October is forecast to be above average over most parts of the island.

The daily maximum temperature could range between 32 deg C and 34 deg C on most days, the Met Service said.

On some rainy days, daily lows of around 23 deg C can be expected, it added.

In a review of weather patterns for the first half of October, the Met Service said the low-level winds that blew predominantly from the south-east or south-west since June weakened and became mostly light and variable in direction.

In the first half of the month, thundery showers occurred over parts of Singapore, mainly in the afternoon on most days.

The highest daily total rainfall for the fortnight was 92.8mm, recorded around Sunset Way on Oct 3, the Met Service said.

The rainfall recorded for most of Singapore was below average in the first half of October, it added.

The area around Bedok North recorded rainfall of 67 per cent below average, and the area around Jurong recorded rainfall of 39 per cent above average.

There were five days in the first half of the month when the daily maximum temperature was 34 deg C or more.

The highest daily maximum temperature of 35.2 deg C was recorded in Choa Chu Kang on Oct 5.

The daily maximum temperatures for the first half of October were between 31.7 deg C and 35.2 deg C.
