There are a total of eight chapters in Split Fiction. With the exception of the first and last levels, each takes place in a completely different environment associated with either Mio or Zoe. This complete Split Fiction walkthrough takes players from the beginning to the end of the game, while also explaining the new powers, setting, and basic goal of each chapter.

Chapter 1: Rader Publishing

In the prologue for Split Fiction, players are introduced to Mio and Zoe, two aspiring writers who take part in a special project to turn their ideas into interactive experiences. After Mio realizes that Rader is up to something sinister, she refuses to get into the simulation, and after arguing with Rader, she winds up in the same simulation bubble as Zoe.

As it turns out, the machine Rader invented isn’t built to handle two people in the same simulation, and after Zoe and Mio load in, they meet and realize something is wrong as a glitch appears in Zoe’s fantasy realm. Throughout this introductory level, Mio and Zoe switch between sci-fi and fantasy realms as they try to get back to the glitch.

Chapter 2: Neon Revenge

This chapter takes place in a revenge story set in a cyberpunk sci-fi world of Mio’s creation. For this level, Mio and Zoe become cyber ninjas – Mio gets a gravity-defying katana, while Zoe gets the ability to manipulate objects in the environment with a Gravity Whip.

Throughout Neon Revenge, Mio and Zoe must work together to take down the leader of a powerful crime syndicate as they chase down the glitch and learn more about the true purpose of Rader’s simulation. You also get to experience the first three Side Stories in Split Fiction, which take players to a self-contained, unique sub-story.

All Neon Revenge Side Stories

• Side Story # 1: The Legend of the Sandfish
  • In the Legend of the Sandfish side story, Split Fiction players enter one of Zoe’s stories about a world trapped within an hourglass. The first side story in the game, The Legend of the Sandfish, features numerous mechanics (including the ability to ride sandfish) and has plenty of references to Dune and Assassin’s Creed.
• Side Story # 2: Farmlife
  • In the Farmlife side story, Split Fiction players enter one of Zoe’s stories from when she was a young girl as you take control of two magical pigs in a fairytale farm – just don’t get too attached to the pigs.

  • In the Mountain Hike side story, Split Fiction players are whisked into one of Zoe’s stories inspired by hikes from when she was a kid as you platform through a towering mountain, helped along by gargantuan Viking-like giants.

Chapter 3: Hopes of Spring

In the third Split Fiction level, Hopes of Spring, Mio and Zoe are transported into a fantasy world of Zoe’s creation, where each gains unique shapeshifting abilities. Mio can transform into a giant white ape and a fish, while Zoe can transform into a fairy and a large talking tree.

Mio’s white ape form can grab onto purple vines in the environment, while her fish form can navigate underwater. Zoe’s fairy form can fly in bursts across large areas, while her tree form can use nature magic to influence the growth of vegetation at specific points in the level.

All Hopes of Spring Side Stories

• Side Story # 4: Train Heist
  • In the Train Heist side story, Split Fiction players enter one of Mio’s side stories in a futuristic flying and bullet hell level, ultimately ending with a side-scrolling shooting segment that’s practically ripped right out of a classic arcade cabinet.
• Side Story # 5: Gameshow
  • In the Gameshow side story, Split Fiction players enter another one of Mio’s stories, as you are forced to participate in a dystopian, Squid Game-like game show for the amusement of a crowd. In this game, Zoe and Mio must pass a bomb back and forth through increasingly more difficult level layouts.
• Side Story # 6: Collapsing Star
  • In the Collapsing Star side story, Split Fiction players must navigate through a space station in the far future that surrounds a star that is about to collapse. This level will test your teamwork and ability to time movements as you avoid the pulsing, eponymous star.

Chapter 4: Final Dawn

The fourth chapter of Split Fiction takes Mio and Zoe back into one of Mio’s sci-fi stories. This one sees our heroines don a suit of armor and a blaster, which can be used to activate color-coded triggers in the environment throughout the level.

Later on, both players also get a Shield Buster, which can be used to break through certain kinds of energy shields throughout the level. This fast-paced shooting level requires a lot of coordination from both players to solve each puzzle, coordinate bombs, and keep up with frantic sections and enemy hordes where communication and proper color coordination matter a lot.

All Final Dawn Side Stories

• Side Story # 7: Kites
  • In the Kites side story, Split Fiction players enter a fantastical story of Zoe’s making where you ride a flying kite through rings and platform through brief running segments between landing zones.
• Side Story # 8: Moon Market
  • One of the longest side stories in the game, Split Fiction players go to the Moon Market, a place filled with enchanting, whimsical characters and several challenges to complete to collect ghostly cats.
• Side Story # 9: Notebook
  • In the Notebook side story, Split Fiction players travel into a pencil-and-paper, sidescrolling world of Zoe’s making. This short level features one of the most stylized art directions in the game and is well worth stopping by for.

Chapter 5: Rise of the Dragon Realm

In the Rise of the Dragon Realm chapter, Mio and Zoe are each given a dragon egg to take care of as they explore a fantastical world of Zoe’s creation and avenge the extinction of dragon kind at the hands of the terrifying Megalith. Over the course of the level, players raise their dragons from eggs into full-sized beasts with unique abilities.

At first, Mio’s dragon can only enable her to glide, while Zoe’s dragon lets her latch onto ivy-covered surfaces. Later on, when the dragons get bigger, Mio’s dragon gains the ability to glide long distances and breathe Acid, while Zoe’s dragon can roll up into a ball to smash enemies and rapidly climb up ivy surfaces.

All Rise of the Dragon Realm Side Stories

• Side Story # 10: Slopes of War
  • In the Slopes of War side story, Split Fiction players don snowboards and shred that gnar after leaping out of a helicopter into this simple, but incredibly fun, SSX-like level.
• Side Story # 11: Space Escape
  • In the Space Escape side story, Split Fiction players must find a way to escape an exploding space station in zero-g by flying past debris and solving puzzles to unlock Oxygen containers.
• Side Story # 12: Birthday Cake
  • In the Birthday Cake side story, Split Fiction players become little tooth characters in one of Mio’s uncharacteristically whimsical, childlike worlds. It’s filled with sugary treats and desserts, which might hint at the sudden thematic turn this level takes at the very end.

Chapter 6: Isolation

In the sixth chapter of this Split Fiction complete walkthrough, Mio and Zoe suffer a major setback and are sent deep into a simulation of Mio’s subconscious. In this level, Mio and Zoe will each receive a ball with unique powers.

Mio’s ball is made up of hundreds of tiny robot spiders that can morph into various shapes, while Zoe’s ball can magnetically latch onto certain surfaces. During certain sections of this level, Zoe will have to control her ball through a pinball-like layout that is under Mio’s control.

Chapter 7: The Hollow

In the penultimate level of Split Fiction, Mio and Zoe are whisked away from Mio’s subconscious into Zoe’s. The typically chipper and upbeat Zoe seems disturbed that such darkness could fester within her mind, and players must make it to the end to help Zoe confront something deep within herself.

In this level, Mio is given a spirit owl that can light up beacons and provide safe areas to walk on (or wallrun on). Zoe, on the other hand, gets a spirit fish that she can command to create portals on certain surfaces, which can pull objects closer when activated.

Final Chapter: Split

The final chapter of Split Fiction is a trippy, mind-bending twist on everything you think you know about the game as Mio and Zoe confront Rader himself. In this level, Mio and Zoe start off in different versions of the same level, themed after their respective genres. But things start to get weird, and our heroines quickly realize something is very wrong with the simulation after Rader breaks into it. The final level throws all of the rules out of the window and merges both simulations into a series of borderline psychedelic escape sequences.

Because Rader can manipulate the rules of the simulation in this final level, Split Fiction players must expect the unexpected and quickly adjust to visual and gameplay shifts from moment to moment.

At the end of this genre-fusing, frantic, mind-blowing level, Mio and Zoe confront Rader and take him down, ending the simulation as they escape from Rader Publishing once and for all.
