SKALD: Against the Black Priory has been officially unveiled as the Epic Games Store‘s free game for the December 28–29 period. This is the 12th title in the storefront’s holiday giveaway lineup, and the 15th freebie offered to Epic Games Store users in December 2025.
Between the start of its ongoing winter event on December 11 and today, the Fortnite developer gave away nearly $350 worth of titles. The two most recent Epic Games Store freebies were We Were Here Together and Cassette Beasts on December 26 and 27, respectively.

Epic Games Store’s 12th Holiday Mystery Game Now Available
The Epic Games Store’s Cassette Beasts giveaway has now been followed by a 100% discount on another turn-based RPG from Swedish publisher Raw Fury: SKALD: Against the Black Priory. The newly launched freebie is available to claim for the next 24 hours, until Monday, December 29, at 8am PT / 11am ET / 5pm CET. This is the first time ever that SKALD: Against the Black Priory is free on the Epic Games Store.
A Brief Intro to SKALD: Against the Black Priory, Epic’s December 28 Free Game
Despite resembling classic CRPGs such as the Ultima series and the Gold Box games, in particular, SKALD: Against the Black Priory is a recent release, having debuted in May 2024. Developed by Norway-based High North Studios, it delivers a retro-style role-playing experience set in a grimdark world full of magic and monsters, including some Lovecraftian horrors. The game offers tactical turn-based combat, optional stealth, an elaborate cooking system, meaningful player choices, and official mod support, among other features.
SKALD currently holds a 75 average score on OpenCritic and “Very Positive” user reviews on Steam. Critics and fans alike have praised its modernization of the ’80s CRPG formula, which makes the genre significantly more accessible by adding features like a full-fledged inventory system, journal, and some optional combat helpers.

In addition to being the 12th title of the Epic Games Store’s ongoing holiday giveaway, SKALD is also the 88th freebie made available to EGS users in 2025. This means the platform has already surpassed 2024, when it offered a total of 80 free titles. The 2025 count is set to reach 91, with one freebie planned for each remaining day of the year. Of those final three, the December 31 offering has the highest likelihood of being a AAA or otherwise high-value release, based on historical trends. So far, this year’s holiday promotion has included two such titles: Hogwarts Legacy and The Callisto Protocol, given away on December 11 and 24, respectively.
