Essentially, friendslop games are viral co-op titles popularized by streamers that guarantee a good time with friends. Human Fall Flat got the ball rolling in 2016, but these kinds have games have only grown more popular as streaming has taken off. Think Chained Together, Liar’s Bar, Schedule 1, and the ever-popular PEAK. While it can be hard to predict which co-op games will take off, the Steam title Crashout Crew seems as if it’s in a good place to do so.
A good recipe for friendslop is deceptively challenging gameplay, either through awkward controls or silly physics, as it produces unexpected outcomes and tons of humorous moments. As its title suggests, this entertaining indie game from developer Aggro Crab is deliberately trying to make players crashout. While transferring boxes and other items using a forklift may seem easy on paper, Crashout Crew deliberately makes things harder for players at every turn. For starters, the physics system will see players’ forklifts spinning if they make a bad move, which could cause them to crash into their friends and create even more chaos. Boxes and items can explode if hit instead of being carefully picked up, setting cargo like chickens free and ruining deliveries. Just like small mistakes can be disastrous in PEAK, the same logic applies to Crashout Crew. Players may be passing boxes between each other instead of lending a hand to help one another scale a mountain, but good chemistry is just as important for success.
It’s worth noting that Aggro Crab, the team behind this game, served as one of the publishers for PEAK. As such, it’ll surely be well aware of how to make a game where mistakes and success stories are equally memorable. For instance, failure in Crashout Crew results in workers needing to pay damages, meaning they lose out on money that can be used for upgrades, adding to the stress players are under. While Crashout Crew might not have randomized islands each day like PEAK does, Aggro Crab strives to keep players engaged by shaking up levels with random hazards.
