In order to conduct this analysis, we collaborated with Prof Gan and Ms Santi at NTU. To ensure high-precision data, they provided a Class 1 sound level meter – a Sqobold recorder and a GRAS 146AE microphone – for all measurements.
Twenty-five homes across the island were chosen to be measured, to experience what it is like to live with road, train and air traffic. To observe road and train traffic, homes with noise sources – such as roads and MRT tracks – directly visible from the window were chosen. Distances from the source ranged from 17m to 85m (adjusted for height). To observe air traffic, homes chosen were located near airbases or airports where occupants reported significant aircraft noise. Distances from the source ranged from 1.1km to 2.3km.
