The First Trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is Out Now and It’s Already Blowing Up

The very first full-length trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has just been released. This trailer lands just a few days after Universal released a 6-minute-long prologue for The Odyssey, which eager fans can only see by purchasing a ticket to an Avatar: Fire and Ash IMAX screening.

A London-born director, Christopher Nolan has already had quite the prolific filmmaking career, having directed and written 12 major motion pictures over the last 27 years. Those 12 feature films include three acclaimed Batman movies, the mind-bending Sci-Fi epics Inception and Interstellar, and more grounded projects like Dunkirk and Oppenheimer, with the latter being the renowned director’s most recent silver screen outing.

The Odyssey’s First Trailer Is Out Now, And It’s Already a Major Hit

An adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic that follows the King of Ithaca Odysseus on his perilous decade-long journey to return to his wife and child following the end of the Trojan War, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was first announced in December 2024. Now, a year later, fans have been treated to a handful of first-look images from the set, depicting Matt Damon as leading man Odysseus, Tom Holland as his son Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway as the Queen of Itacha Penelope. Today, the very first trailer for The Odyssey was released.

Coming in at just under two minutes long, The Odyssey‘s first trailer gives fans their best look yet at Christopher Nolan’s upcoming fantasy epic. The trailer opens with an impressive shot of a makeshift beach graveyard, which presumably comes from early in the movie when the Trojan War has just come to an end after 10 years of fighting. As Matt Damon’s Odysseus says the line “After years of war, no one could stand between my men and home, not even me,” we see shots of Odysseus leading his troops into a wood, his home of Ithaca, and his wife and son anxiously waiting for his return.

A brief tease of the infamous Trojan Horse (which was a plan concocted by Odysseus) is then shown, which is followed by a shot of Odysseus and his men inside the wooden contraption, who all rush to silence a fellow soldier as they’re stabbed in the back in order to maintain the ruse. Odysseus is then shown entering a dark cave, the entrance of which is promptly blocked by a silhouetted giant, hinting at the appearance of the cyclops Polyphemus.

The final 30 seconds of The Odyssey‘s first trailer teases Odysseus’ journey through the underworld, shows him and his men rowing through a storm, and ends with a shot of Penelope holding Odysseus’ face and asking him to promise he’ll come back, to which he replies “What if I can’t?”.

It may not be full of impressive sweeping landscape shots and promises of high-octane action sequences, but The Odyssey‘s first trailer does a great job of setting up the core premise of the movie and its main players, while also teasing some of the source material’s more fantastical elements in a grounded way that feels very in line with Christopher Nolan’s past works.

The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey also seems to be a pretty big hit already. At the time of writing – just two hours after it went live – The Odyssey‘s trailer (posted by Universal Pictures) already has 1,314,396 views, 138,000 likes, and over 10,000 comments, the vast majority of which are praising the trailer and sharing their excitement for the upcoming blockbuster. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will hit theaters on July 17, 2026, meaning that fans can expect to see at least another trailer or two in the coming months, which will likely tease the presence of gods like Zendaya’s Athena.
