According to an anonymous e-mail, Sony is pushing more developers to utilize the PS5’s low power mode, even going so far as to provide detailed documentation and explanation for how to use the feature. Sony reportedly emphasized that developers should look to make optimizations to their games to support 60 FPS in low-power mode, rather than reducing frame rates to accommodate the shift in performance. The email also speculated that the hardware developer may be pushing its low-power mode in preparation for the next PlayStation console.
The PS5’s “Power Saver for Games” setting has already been utilized effectively by some games, with the setting focused on scaling back high-end performance elements. Turning on Power Saver mode forces the PS5 to use less of its hardware to function, cutting its memory usage in half and scaling back its performance in order to cut down on the power used by the console. Many games that support Power Saver mode, like Ghost of Yotei and Demon’s Souls, enforce a hard 30 FPS cap for the feature, while a game’s resolution is also typically reduced by using Power Saver mode.
