Highly Rated Capcom Game Reaches Xbox After 9 Years

Monster Hunter Stories is now available on the latest two generations of Xbox consoles, as is its sequel. With this pair of arrivals, Capcom’s turn-based RPG spin-off series has at last reached Xbox nearly a decade after its inaugural game first hit the market.

The Monster Hunter franchise formally debuted on Microsoft’s consoles with Monster Hunter Frontier Z (formerly called MHF Online), an MMORPG that was released for the Xbox 360 in 2010, but only in Japan. The franchise took another eight years to reach Xbox gamers in the West with Monster Hunter: World. MH Rise and MH Wilds followed in 2021 and 2025, respectively. However, the Monster Hunter Stories spin-off series was never available on Xbox consoles—until now.

Monster Hunter Stories Franchise Finally Debuts on Xbox

The long-awaited debut took place on November 14, when the first two Monster Hunter Stories games launched for the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. The latest version of MHS is priced at $29.99, whereas MHS 2: Wings of Ruin retails for $10 more. Both figures are consistent with their current listings on the PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, and Steam.

Monster Hunter Stories Games for Xbox Consoles

The Monster Hunter spin-off series’ Xbox debut arrives just over a month after its first game celebrated the ninth anniversary of its Japan-only 3DS release. Its Nintendo exclusivity ended in December 2017, when the turn-based RPG launched for Android and iOS devices in Japan. English-language mobile ports followed in 2018, with the game eventually reaching the PS4, Switch, and PC in June 2024. Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin had a slightly less fragmented—but still staggered—pre-Xbox release, debuting on the Switch and PC in July 2021 before reaching the PS4 alongside the first game in June 2024.

Although the first two entries in the series took years to arrive on Microsoft’s consoles, their follow-up will break that pattern. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection has been confirmed as a day-one Xbox Series X/S title since its reveal in summer 2025 and is currently scheduled to launch on March 13, 2026. If the series continues beyond that, Capcom is expected to maintain day-and-date Xbox releases, reflecting a broader industry trend toward more platform-agnostic game publishing.

While the mainline Monster Hunter games are real-time action RPGs with gear-driven progression and highly flexible combat, the Monster Hunter Stories spin-offs are turn-based JRPGs that draw from the Pokemon formula, focusing on collecting and raising Monsties, exploiting type matchups, and strategic turn prediction. MHS titles are generally more challenging than Pokemon, with players obtaining new creatures by stealing eggs and hatching them rather than using Poke Balls.
