Genshin Impact developer HoYoverse has teased its next game with some short in-engine footage. Described as an open-world MMO, the project looks nothing like Genshin Impact—or any other title previously released by the Chinese studio.
As of November 2025, HoYoverse is actively maintaining five games: Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Honkai Impact 3rd, Zenless Zone Zero, and Tears of Themis. Several additional projects are currently in the works at the Shanghai-based company. Some, such as the Animal Crossing-like game Petit Planet, have been officially announced. Others remain more mysterious, including an open-world MMORPG reportedly built with Unreal Engine 5, according to some previously emerged job listings.
HoYoverse Shares Video Teaser for Unreal Engine 5 Open-World Fantasy MMO
HoYoverse’s ongoing talent acquisition efforts have now provided even more insights into its unnamed MMO project. As noted by ResetEra user L.O.R.D., the company recently shared in-engine footage of the upcoming title via social media platform RedNote. The 19-second clip reveals little, showing a fantasy landscape with a magical stone or root-like structure and several horsemen in the background. However, it clearly signals a major stylistic shift, indicating that the Unreal Engine 5-powered MMO will adopt realistic graphics, marking a major departure from the anime art style that the Genshin Impact developer is known for.
HoYoverse’s UE5 Game Will Have PvP
A promotional image accompanying the video that HoYoverse shared on RedNote offers additional hints about the upcoming game. It references features such as PvP, boss battles, “all-terrain battle AI,” and an “Eco System,” though the latter two terms are not explained. A brief message accompanying the footage describes a vast fantasy world populated by legendary heroes to meet, beasts and “evil ghosts” to slay, and “ancient mysteries” to uncover. It also hints at the unannounced HoYoverse game having a companion system, saying players will be able to get to know their allies. Story-wise, it promises an opportunity to “restore the collapsed order, end the corrupt contract, and face the impermanent divine will,” according to a machine translation of the blurb.
HoYoverse’s Unreal Engine 5-powered game has likely been in development for at least one year, as the Chinese studio first started advertising job openings for UE5 experts in August 2024. While it’s possible the positions were for a different project, studios typically adopt new engines cautiously, often starting with a single title before broader implementation. Either way, the unnamed MMO still appears to be in its infancy and may take years to reach the finish line.

HoYoverse has traditionally released its games across PC, consoles, and mobile platforms. While the use of Unreal Engine 5 makes a mobile release for its upcoming project somewhat less likely, it cannot be ruled out. Several titles—including Fortnite, Infinite Nikki, and Game of Thrones: Kingsroad—already run on UE5 while supporting mobile devices, with more being on the way.
