Just wanted to write a quick rant/reminder here because I see so many young Singaporeans falling into this trap.

When we were in school or doing NS, it didn’t matter who we hung out with. We were all broke together, eating $3.50 cai fan at the hawker center, drinking Teh Peng, and complaining about life. But once you start working, your social circle starts shaping your financial future way more than you think.
I had a group of secondary school friends I kept in touch with for years. Every time we met up, it was the exact same story: endless complaining about their boss, blaming the government, talking about how the “system is rigged,” and complaining about having no money. But here’s the kicker—every weekend they wanted to go to high-end bars, spend $200 per night on alcohol, buy branded stuff on installment plans, or try to get-rich-quick through dodgy high-leverage crypto trades or online gambling.
Whenever anyone in the group tried to upskill, take on a side hustle, or save money, they would pull them down: “Wah, play big shot ah?” or “Don’t so try-hard lah, life short just enjoy.”
