Being obsessed with zombie fiction for as long as I have been, I’m comfortable saying No More Room in Hell 2 is the year’s best zombie game. Since I first played it in early access two years ago, I’ve loved its Romero-inspired vibes and slower, more punishing take on a Left 4 Dead-style game–doubling the co-op team size to eight players is a fun wrinkle, too.
So imagine my surprise when I recently hopped back into the game and found its latest update added a map that goes in a much different direction, trading its Night of the Living Dead inspirations for something much more at home in Friday the 13th.
The Camp Blood update brings a slasher-inspired summer-camp map, Ruby Lake, to the game’s wave-based Survival mode, which lives alongside its more campaign-like Scenario mode. Not that I wasn’t open to the pivot, but as a horror obsessive, I wanted to know what inspired the new direction, even as the game’s Romero-esque core is still well-represented in all other maps and modes.
“Romero is ingrained in our DNA as far back as the original game, but we’ve always said that films and television, more than other games, are our main source of inspiration. This inspiration transcends just Romero and extends into horror as a broader theme,” creative principal Matt Kazan told me via email, going on to name a parade of my favorite things (plus CW’s long-running monster-of-the-week series).
“Whether it’s Stephen King, ’80s slashers, Alfred Hitchcock, Evil Dead, Supernatural, or even weird stuff like Lost or Twin Peaks, and even Backrooms, our inspirations come from all sorts of places.”
