Footage circulating online on 28 October showed residents wading through chest-deep floodwater to reach safety, while vehicles were caught in the rising waters.
One social media user explained that Patong is surrounded by hills, meaning heavy rainfall can send large volumes of water rushing downhill into the town. High tides may also make it harder for floodwater to drain into the sea.
