Hifu concentrates ultrasound energy at selected depths, creating small areas of controlled heating within the tissue. This can trigger collagen contraction and a repair response that encourages collagen remodelling over time.
The intended result is improved firmness and a degree of lifting as the tissue responds. Different treatment depths allow different layers to be addressed, although the appropriate settings depend on the device and the patient’s anatomy.
Clinical research supports the potential for gradual improvement. In a prospective study published in Skin Research and Technology in 2017, a team including researchers from South Korea’s Chung-Ang University treated 32 Korean participants and found improved skin elasticity at 12 weeks, including in the cheeks.
A plan shaped by the face
A less defined lower face is not always a problem of loose skin alone. Loss of facial volume may also need consideration, and tightening tissue does not replace missing volume. For more advanced sagging, The Clifford Clinic’s treatment information acknowledges that the improvement from Hifu may not match a surgical result.
“Treatment is planned to your anatomy, not sold by the shot,” Dr Ee writes in his published guide. The emphasis is on selecting the areas and depths that need treatment, rather than treating a larger shot count as an outcome in itself.
