Ng Eng Hen’s smoky toast quip amuses netizens

Retired politician Dr Ng Eng Hen’s quip about his breakfast toast tasting “smoky” amid elevated haze levels in the region has left netizens tickled.

“Local breakfast is hard to beat. But somehow, the toast tasted a bit smoky… Wonder why?” said Ng, who was Singapore’s longest-serving defence minister when he retired from politics in May last year.

Netizens commend Ng’s wit

The Facebook post, which shows Ng having an egg and toast breakfast set at a Fun Toast outlet, has racked up more than 1,900 reactions and 140 comments.

Netizens were quick to spot the light-hearted reference to the haze, with several piling on the joke while pretending to answer his question.

“New flavour of the month. Subtle but to the point,” said a Facebook user.

“The rest of the 11 months, the toast tastes great, but you didn’t thank the chef,” another said. Yet another said: “Smoky taste is available only on a seasonal basis, typically from mid-September to mid-November.”

Several alluded to an Indonesian politician’s claim that the country’s forests provide oxygen to Singapore and Malaysia when responding to criticisms for regional transboundary haze caused by fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra.

“It has something to do with Indonesia not sending oxygen to us! Stop having that for breakfast until they start sending oxygen to us,” said a Facebook user. “The toast was normal when Indonesia sent us oxygen!” another said.

One user was even more direct. “Roti Indo,” the Facebook user said.

Several netizens were impressed with Ng’s sense of humour.

Never know that you got such humour,” said a user.

This is not the first time Ng has displayed his wit. When announcing his retirement from politics last year, he described it as his “Liberation Day”, referencing US President Donald Trump’s use of the term when announcing his trade tariffs.
