‘Red tourism’: retracing China’s revolutionary roads in real time


The first thing you notice about “red tourism” is the scale of Yanan, in Shaanxi province, where Mao Zedong solidified his leadership, developed his core ideology and built the foundations for victory in the Chinese civil war. Tour groups in matching caps, lines of coaches, queues for photographs beside Mao statues – what was once a school trip has become one of the most visible forms of domestic travel in China, and younger people are now driving much of it.

Red tourism is no longer about remembrance. It has become a way of retracing a story that feels unfinished.
