The current-generation iPad mini is nearly two years old now and due for a refresh. Normally, this would be an easy thing for Apple to do. Put a new chip in, maybe improve the display and/or connectivity, and call it a day. But it’s not so simple this time because of a little thing called the iPhone Duo.
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable phone, and when it’s unfolded, it looks and feels somewhat like an iPad mini. They are not completely identical – the Duo continues to run iOS, while the iPad mini runs iPadOS – but the two certainly share similarities.
In my mind, the iPad mini needs a bit of a glow-up if it’s to remain a compelling option for customers. Word on the street is that the next iPad mini will have an OLED display and that it will feature a water-resistant design – a first for an iPad. These two changes could yield numerous benefits and would make sense in Apple’s lineup of iPads.
