In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Mr Wong said effective safeguards for AI require international cooperation given cross-border risks.
“We must continue to find practical ways to build common ground and bring more countries along,” he said, adding that the technology held tremendous promise but must remain under human control and oversight.
Singapore has launched several initiatives to build safeguards for AI, including the Singapore AI Safety Institute – which helps develop evaluation tools and common best practices for the technology.
Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo said on Tuesday that it was “encouraging” that the institute had been highlighted in an article published by OpenAI, another major AI firm, on building AI safety standards.
In a LinkedIn post about Mr Wong’s announcement, Mrs Teo said international cooperation for AI safety must also be backed by practical work.
