A team of intrepid developers plan to release a remaster of Dragon Age: Origins next year.
Dragon Age: Origins, the BioWare game that kicked off the critically acclaimed and influential Dragon Age franchise in 2009, suffers from performance issues that make it difficult to play successfully on modern PC hardware. Fortunately for fans of the first Dragon Age, a team of developers is planning to release an unofficial remaster of Dragon Age: Origins in 2027.
According to Mark Darrah, Dragon Age creator and producer, the team at Bioware no longer use or know how to use the in-house, outdated Aurora Engine, making a remaster like the Mass Effect Legendary Edition unlikely. So it falls to developers outside BioWare and EA to tackle the project. As it turns out, there do happen to be a team of people out there who want to see Dragon Age: Origins revived and updated, and a lot of fans who are excited about it.
In a Reddit post by the username Shot_Let_1344, a team of intrepid developers are about 60% of the way through decompiling and modernizing the source code, which they say will mean better performance and allow for broader modding support. Dragon Age: Origins has a large, dedicated presence on Nexus Mods, so this will be exciting for modders as well as fans of the original game. In addition, they hope this could lead to 64-bit, controller, and net support and to making co-op campaigns possible. The development team is targeting 2027 for a release of the Dragon Age: Origins remaster once they reach around 90% decompilation of the code. The developer has also said they have no intention of profiting from this project.
With a follow-up to Dragon Age: The Veilguard also looking unlikely, possible due to EA’s lack of interest in continuing the franchise, a remaster of Dragon Age: Origins is good news for fans and newcomers to the series who want to experience the original game on contemporary hardware.
