New StarCraft shooter game announced by Blizzard

StarCraft fans finally have a new game to look forward to, although they will have to wait quite a while before they can actually play it. Blizzard revealed the project during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026, but it is targeting a release in 2030 – assuming development proceeds according to schedule.

Titled simply StarCraft, it’s not quite the StarCraft III many are hoping for. Instead of a real-time strategy genre, the new StarCraft is an open-world, story-driven sci-fi shooter. It is reported set in the Koprulu Sector decades after the events of StarCraft II.

The announcement was accompanied by a jaw-dropping trailer featuring a Dominion soldier being sent into battle against the Zerg. It establishes the gritty tone of the game and gives fans their first look at Blizzard’s return to the StarCraft universe, but there was no actual gameplay footage. Platforms have also not been announced, but it’s safe to say the game will be released for PC and next-gen consoles; presumably the PlayStation 6 and Microsoft’s Project Helix.

Interestingly, this isn’t Blizzard’s first rodeo in trying to make a StarCraft shooter. Old-time fans will remember the ill-fated StarCraft: Ghost, a third-person action game first announced in 2002, spent years in development hell before being officially cancelled in 2014. The new StarCraft (I’m hazarding a guess that Blizzard will confirm the title closer to launch) is unrelated, but it being a shooter means Blizzard is finally revisiting an idea that has been hanging over its second biggest franchise for more than two decades.

P/S: By the time the game arrives – if it arrives, it will have been 15 years since StarCraft II’s final expansion, Legacy of the Void, was released in 2015. Feeling old yet?
