Dyson CameraJet: The smart electric toothbrush

Once a gap is detected, the CameraJet releases a short, cone-shaped burst of mouth rinse into it. The idea here is to brush and floss at the same time, rather than separately, and thus cutting the complete routine down to around three minutes and, perhaps more importantly, removing the excuse that you forgot or are too lazy to floss afterwards. The 12.5ml tank sits inside the handle and can be replenished from the accompanying dock.

Because this is a Dyson product, the brushing half of the toothbrush is no less high-tech. The contoured head combines softer outer bristles with firmer inner ones, while the motor oscillates 245 times a second. Dyson says its variable sonic motion prevents the bristles from stalling against the teeth, allowing the CameraJet to remove “up to 72%” more plaque from difficult-to-reach areas than what it says are market-leading premium electric toothbrushes (Oral-B, is that you?). Three brushing intensities – Gentle, Variable and Deep Clean – are also available, while built-in sensors warn when too much pressure or an incorrect technique is being used. The RFID-equipped brush head tracks wear and even prompts you when it is due for replacement.

A Singapore connection

Dyson has also developed its own non-foaming toothpaste and low-foaming mouth rinse because it says conventional foaming formulations can interfere with the camera. A starter supply of both comes in the box, together with two brush heads, the refill-and-charging dock, a travel case and charging cable.

It might also surprise some that the CameraJet’s development has a Singapore connection. Dyson worked with the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Dentistry to develop a laboratory substitute for dental plaque, which was then used to study how different water-jet shapes removed it. That work led to the wider conical jet used by the finished toothbrush rather than the narrow stream commonly associated with water flossers.

At S$699, the CameraJet costs considerably more than most electric toothbrushes, even before replacement heads and oral-care refills are considered. But the bigger surprise isn’t its price – that is almost expected of a Dyson product – but that the company has chosen the humble toothbrush as its next category.
