It only took 13 years, but we finally have our first look at what GTA VI, the long-awaited title releasing later this year – if you believe Rockstar – will look like. It’s an occasion special enough to warrant an exclusive broadcast deal with Netflix (for a video game!) though the half-hour presentation was uploaded to Rockstar Games’s YouTube channel shortly afterwards.
In it, we get a detailed look at Vice City for the first time in 20 years. We also get to see just how the game will shape up with its two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, and also how players will be able to interact with the world around them.
Interacting with objects, shooting at NPCs
The burden of choice, even in a video game.

And when I say that, I mean the world around them. Open a fridge and you can pick out a drink (food is tipped to be a major mechanic in the game), breaking into a car requires multiple inputs, and for miscellaneous scenarios, a menu on the bottom right will list a series of actions the player can take with specific objects and NPCs. At this rate, you’ll be needing to press R2 to breathe. Plus, proper quicktime events are set to be a feature of the game now.
As for what hasn’t changed much, combat still seems quite similar to what was in GTA V. At least, on the surface – one thing that has changed is that NPCs are now able to stay on the ground injured if they’re hurt but not killed. Shooting physics are also slightly different; for the lack of a better comparison, the shootouts look a little less arcade-y and more like an FPS. Recoil is just a bit harsher, your character flinches when being shot at, and opponents stagger back slightly longer after getting shot.
Jason’s special ability slows down time and shows a map of vulnerable areas on an NPC.

It seems as if special abilities are also making a return. Only Jason’s was shown in the showcase, and at first glance, it looks similar to Michael’s ability to slow down time in shootouts in GTA V – with the addition of a heatmap showing an opponent NPC’s most vulnerable areas (which almost reminds me of Fallout’s VATS).
