SINGAPORE: Amos Yee will be charged on Wednesday (Aug 26) over “alarming and racially divisive” content he allegedly published online.
The police said on Tuesday that they received several reports between April and July this year concerning online content published by Yee.
The content was “found to be alarming and racially divisive”, and investigations were subsequently conducted, they added.
Yee, 27, was found to have made two posts on his blog on Apr 7 and Apr 11. He also uploaded a video on X on May 27, in which he stated that Singapore’s Malay-Muslim and Indian communities were heavily discriminated against by the Chinese majority.
“He also made statements about the government’s treatment of these communities and suggested that they should protest against the government,” the police said.
In another blog post published on Jun 30, Yee said, among other things, that children were capable of consenting to sexual acts and advocated for the abolition of laws governing the age at which children can consent to such acts, according to the police.
“This is on top of three other videos that he made and which were found to be uploaded online in 2021, in which he made statements advocating sexual relationships involving children and the abolition of laws prohibiting child sexual abuse material.”
For allegedly publishing these contents, Yee will be charged with knowingly attempting to promote, on grounds of race, feelings of disharmony between different racial groups; and for making indecent communications likely to cause alarm.
