Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong to visit Central Asia


SINGAPORE – Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong will visit Kazakhstan from Aug 24 to 27 and Uzbekistan from Aug 27 to 31.

Announcing the official visits on Aug 23, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said this will be his first visit to Central Asia.

In Kazakhstan, Lee will visit Astana and Almaty. In Astana, he will call on President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Digital Development Zhaslan Madiyev and Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev. 

During the trip, Lee will be conferred the Order of Dostyk (Friendship) of the First Class Award by Tokayev. Previous Singapore leaders who have received the award include founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew in 2012 and then President Halimah Yacob in 2023.

Lee will also deliver a lecture at Nazarbayev University, where he will be conferred an honorary professorship. Established in 2010, Nazarbayev University is an autonomous research university in Astana that was set up as part of Kazakhstan’s efforts to develop its higher education and research sector.
