Competitive mrt walker aims to hike 50km along downtown line

SINGAPORE – Trevor Kam dubs himself a “competitive MRT walker”.

The 20-year-old is on a quest to walk the route of each of Singapore’s MRT lines within a day.

Earlier in August, he completed treks along the North East Line (25.1km in 5 hours and 2 minutes, according to workout app Strava) and the Circle Line (47.19km in 10 hours and 6 minutes).

He has posted calls on Instagram and TikTok for people to join him on Aug 21 at Bukit Panjang MRT station to walk the route of the Downtown Line. The walk will begin at 7am.

When asked why he is doing this, he says: “Let’s do something that’s going to spice life up a bit.”

“Often, people think that you can’t do anything in Singapore, but there are all these opportunities. I’m on a mission to make the country more exciting,” he says over a video call.

Kam is a Singapore permanent resident with Australian citizenship and is waiting to start national service. He has roped in a Singaporean friend, culinary student Bryan Kow, to plot the route for the MRT walks.

According to their trails plotted using Apple Maps and Google, the Downtown Line walking route is 50km long, his longest walk since he started. They will take breaks for food around 11am, 3pm and 6pm. They plan to carry a Singapore flag.

Other MRT walks are tentatively scheduled for the weeks ahead, with the Thomson East Coast Line on Aug 28; the North South Line on Sept 5; and the East-West Line on Sept 12.

Kam says he started with the shortest route according to mapping apps and the East-West Line walk will be the longest, although he has not plotted the route yet to know the exact distance.
