Making a 1,615 sq ft Hong Kong rental a beautiful home with reversible design


When Laura and Richard Choi arrived at their new 1,615 sq ft (150 square metre) duplex in Repulse Bay, they had little more than four suitcases of possessions – a reality of lives spent criss-crossing the globe on business. They had never felt particularly anchored to any of their previous flats, but this time they wanted Hong Kong to be home rather than just a base.

Enter their long-time friends Radovan Macak and Him Liu, co-founders of Prague Design Hub (PRAGDH), which has studios in Hong Kong and the Czech Republic. Their brief was to make this four-bedroom, three-bathroom rental feel deeply personal, without making permanent changes to a single structural element. Any design intervention had to be reversible, leaving the original fabric of the flat intact – and the project had to be completed in three months.
