BYD T35 Electric Light Truck Makes Southeast Asian Debut In Singapore

The T35 measures 5,000mm long and 1,780mm wide, with a 2,525mm wheelbase. Its 3,700kg gross vehicle weight allows for a payload of up to 1,900kg, while the cab accommodates three occupants. A tight 4.8-metre turning radius should also prove useful when navigating Singapore’s narrower urban environments.

Crucially for smaller operators, the T35 has been configured to retain Class 3 driving licence requirements. Its relatively compact proportions are also intended to broaden the number of places it can operate within Singapore, including access to HDB multi-storey carparks.

Power comes from a 62.36kWh version of BYD’s Blade Battery, feeding an electric powertrain producing 150kW and 340Nm. The claimed range is 367km on a full charge, giving the T35 enough theoretical endurance to handle a substantial amount of urban driving before returning to a charger.

DC charging is supported at up to 71kW, allowing the battery to go from 20 to 80 per cent in approximately 36 minutes. AC charging at up to 6.6kW is also supported. There is regenerative braking too, allowing energy normally lost while slowing down to be fed back into the battery.

BYD’s Battery Thermal Management System meanwhile maintains the battery within its intended operating temperature range, with the company claiming it can extend battery lifespan by more than 10 per cent.

BYD’s Blade Battery has become one of the company’s defining technologies, but the T35’s safety package extends beyond its battery chemistry. The battery is certified to UL1642 and UN ECE R100.03 standards, while the truck incorporates a high-voltage multi-in-one system to manage its electrical architecture and vehicle protection functions.

Electronic Braking System (EBS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) are paired with front disc brakes, while the high-strength cab structure has been engineered to meet European R29 collision standards.

Commercial vehicles have historically prioritised utility over creature comforts, although that distinction is gradually disappearing.

The T35 receives a fully floating cab and air-suspension seats designed to isolate occupants from bumps and vibrations. There is also an LCD display, keyless entry and one-touch start.

Singapore has set a target for all vehicles to run on cleaner energy by 2040, and commercial vehicles will inevitably form an important part of that transition.

Passenger EVs may receive considerably more public attention, but vans and trucks perform some of the most repetitive and mileage-intensive journeys on Singapore roads. Electrifying them therefore represents another significant piece of the broader transport puzzle.

And with Singapore becoming the first Southeast Asian market to receive the BYD T35, that transition has just gained another practical option.
