Wonder Man Star Reacts to Series Cancellation, Just Months After Emmy Nomination and Season 2 Greenlight

Wonder Man star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has responded to the shock cancellation of his critically-acclaimed Disney+ series, just months after the show was renewed.

Writing on Instagram, Abdul-Mateen confirmed earlier reports that Marvel had reversed course on the series’ continuation, though offered no further clue as to why this decision had been made.

Launched back in January to rave reviews and a subsequent Emmy nomination for Abdul-Mateen’s performance, the series followed Abdul-Mateen’s struggling actor Simon and Ben Kingsley’s beloved Marvel character Trevor Slattery, the veteran thespian. A brilliantly-written buddy comedy, the series revealed that both characters held a secret from the other as they warmed to each other and navigated the ups and downs of life in Hollywood — something that now seems cruelly ironic.

Last night, Wonder Man showrunner Andrew Guest also commented on the shock cancellation, though gave no more detail on why it had happened.

“Marvel has cancelled Wonder Man,” Guest wrote. “So proud of the show we made. So grateful to have worked with Destin Daniel Cretton, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley. Want to thank everyone who watched and all the critics who supported us.”

While it’s still unclear what has happened to prompt this surprising cancellation, the decision comes amid wider cutbacks on Disney+ spending. Other than Vision Quest and Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, both of which are already in post-production, Marvel has no further live-action TV series announced as greenlit. The same is also true of Disney’s Star Wars wing, which also has no confirmed further series in the pipeline now it has finished filming Ahsoka Season 2.
